Project Abstract

Abstract
This study will focus on the development of a comprehensive web-based platform aimed at transforming how public transport information is accessed and utilized by commuters. Globally, cities are increasingly adopting intelligent transport systems to ease the burden of daily commuting, yet many developing regions still rely on outdated and fragmented methods of information dissemination. In Southern Africa, where Zambia is situated, rapid urbanization has placed immense pressure on public transport networks, and the situation in Zambian cities such as Lusaka and Kitwe is no different. Here, commuters often depend on word-of-mouth, physically visiting bus stations, or making phone calls to operators to gather basic details like routes, fares, or departure times. This study acknowledges the critical role that accessible transport information plays in reducing commuter anxiety, saving time, and promoting the use of public transit, which in turn helps to decongest roads and lower emissions. The current problem is a significant information asymmetry; commuters are frequently left guessing about schedule changes, alternative routes, or expected travel durations, which leads to missed appointments and overall dissatisfaction with public services. Although some efforts have been made by local authorities to publish static timetables or use social media alerts, these measures have not been integrated or interactive, and therefore fail to provide the real-time, user-centric solution that is required.
The purpose of this study will be to design and implement a Bus and Transport Information System that offers a single, dependable gateway for all journey planning needs. The system will be built to directly solve the identified problem by consolidating route data, fares, and live updates into one accessible platform. The specific objectives will be to create an interactive mapping feature for identifying stops and routes, to develop a fare calculation tool, and to implement a notification system for service disruptions. The independent variables for this study will be the systems features, such as the accuracy of data and the ease of the user interface, while the dependent variable will be the efficiency and satisfaction of the commuter journey. The study will be anchored on the Technology Acceptance Model, which helps to explain why users adopt new information systems, and the Theory of Planned Behavior, which looks at how attitudes and perceived control influence usage. Empirical studies from other African nations, such as Kenya and South Africa, have found that mobile-based transit applications significantly improve travel predictability, though most of these solutions are tailored to private minibus operators and fail to include formal municipal bus services. A clear gap in the literature exists concerning solutions that integrate formal and informal transit data comprehensively for the Zambian context. This study will fill that gap by creating a prototype that incorporates local operator input and is specifically designed for the countrys infrastructure and user habits.
Methodologically, this study will employ a design science research approach, which is suitable for creating and evaluating new IT artifacts. The target population will consist of daily public bus users in Lusaka, as well as transport operators. From this group, a sample population of one hundred and fifty participants will be derived using stratified random sampling to ensure a good mix of age groups, genders, and travel frequencies. Data collection will rely on structured questionnaires and system usability tests. To measure validity, the researcher will use content validity, where experts in transport and IT will review the questionnaires for clarity and relevance, and criterion validity will be established by comparing initial user perceptions with actual system performance metrics. The reliability of the instruments will be ascertained through a pilot test with a small group of users, and the results will be analyzed using Cronbachs alpha to ensure the questions consistently measure the same constructs. All participation will be voluntary, and confidentiality will be strictly safeguarded by ensuring that any personal data gathered is anonymized. Informed consent will be sought from every participant, and the research process will be conducted with the utmost integrity to ensure that no harm comes to any individual involved in the study.
